DEPARTMENT INTRODUCTION
The Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) Hospital Shah Alam (HSAS) is at secondary level of service i.e. to provide general specialist care for patients with disorders of the ear, nose, throat and related areas of the head and neck region. Our department serves the residents of Shah Alam and the neighbouring districts.
Our department offers three major services, namely Specialist ORL Clinical service, Audiology service and Speech-Language and Swallowing Therapy service. ORL Department HSAS also provides special interest services in Audiovestibular ORL. The specialist clinical services consist of Outpatient service, ORL related procedure services, Allergic Test service, Inpatient service and surgical services.
Structurally, the department has a designated Specialist Clinic area with facilities for Audiology and Vestibular as well as Speech-Language Therapy located at level 5 of the Specialist Clinic Complex and a multidisciplinary ward for inpatient. A designated operating room in General Operating Theatre Complex at Level 6 is also available for surgical session.
In order to provide better quality services, the department of ORL HSAS has undergone upgrades and transformation processes. The Audiovestibular ORL Clinic has been upgraded with the latest equipment and technology to provide better care and effective rehabilitation, in patients with vestibular related diseases.
We are also actively involved with other disciplines in the multidisciplinary team approach of patient management as well as preventive ORL services such as Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS).

GOALS
To provide ORL services in a safe, efficient and professional manner. Department of ORL HSAS will be the model department, a centre of excellence for Audiovestibular ORL Services apart from General ORL services with the goal of providing client centred excellent quality of care through an environment conducive with competent and committed staff with a progressive mindset.
OBJECTIVES
- To foster a culture of professionalism in delivering ORL services and engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration with Audiologist and Speech-Language Therapist to ensure holistic patient management.
- To deliver ORL services efficiently by achieving ≥ 90% of patients with waiting time of ≤ 90 minutes to see medical personnel at ORL Specialist Outpatient Clinic.
- To manage and perform surgery effectively by attaining ≥ 70% of ears with hearing improvement, 3 months post-myringoplasty by minimum of 5 dB at least at one frequency by Pure Tone Audiometry.
- To perform surgery safely by achieving ≤ 3% incidence rate of primary post-tonsillectomy haemorrhage.
