Q :WHO IS A HEPATOLOGIST?
A clinician with the expertise in managing simple and complex cases of acute, acute- on-chronic and chronic liver diseases, including acute liver failure and end-stage liver failure with its associated complications like variceal bleeding, ascites, hepatic encephalopathy and hepatocellular carcinoma. The hepatologist is also expected to be competent in the assessment, evaluation and management of patients requiring liver transplantation.

Q : WHAT IS THE BURDEN OF LIVER DISEASE IN MALAYSIA?
Liver disease is a major component of digestive diseases in our country. Liver Cirrhosis is an important cause of burden of illness in the digestive disorder group. (ref: Malaysian Burden of Disease And Injury Study-Health Prioritization: Burden Of Disease Approach. ISBN 983-99320-1-2). Also, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the top 10 cancers amongst Malaysian males and most of such cases are associated with hepatitis B. There is a lot we can do to ensure that Malaysians are screened for HCC and that complications of portal hypertension are detected early and managed accordingly. The spectrum of liver diseases is huge and managing these diseases is very challenging. Selayang hospital is the only dedicated hepatobiliary centre in this country and will provide you with ample opportunities and training in the management of both simple and complex hepatobiliary cases.
The duration of the training programme is 3 years. The first year of training will be at a high volume gastroenterology centre for training in the common gastrointestinal diseases and upper and lower endoscopies. Training for the remaining two years will be at the Hepatology Department of Selayang Hospital. On completion of the full programme you will be credentialled as consultant hepatologist with expertise in both diagnostic and therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy.

Tempat Letak Kenderaan disediakan di Aras Satu (Bawah) Bangunan Utama Hospital Selayang. Tempat Letak Kenderaan juga disediakan di sekitar Unit Kecemasan dan Rawatan Harian.

Kafeteria Awam boleh dikunjungi di Aras Tiga berdekatan dengan Auditorium Hospital Selayang, Waktu operasi ialah pada setiap hari dari jam 7.00pagi sehingga 9.30malam.
Perpustakaan
Perpusatakaan terletak di Aras Tiga berdekatan dengan Auditorium dibuka kepada pelajar untuk kajian.
Surau
Surau utama terletak di aras tiga bedekatan dengan Jabatan Rekod Perubatan. Surau mini juga tedapat di setiap aras bangunan hospital.

Kedai makanan & bakeri berada bersebelahan dengan Jabatan Kecemasan.

Anjung Kasih ialah kemudahan penginapan yang diberikan kepada keluarga pesakit yang memerlukan penempatan sementara sepanjang pesakit mendapat rawatan di HS. Kemudahan ini adalah percuma dan terhad. Keutamaan diberikan kepada individu yang menetap jauh dari Hospital Selayang dan juga bergantung kepada kekosongan bilik penginapan. Untuk maklumat lanjut boleh berhubung terus dengan Bahagian Pentadbiran HS.

The Total Hospital Information System in Selayang Hospital is an integration of clinical, administrative and financial systems. The clinical is made up of Hospital Information System (HIS) and Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS). The HIS is made up of various applications (Person Management, Scheduling, Order Management, Clinical Documentation, PIS, LIS, RIS, and so on). The Administration & Finance system as back end is integrated with the HIS so that any chargeable procedures or tests performed on the patients will automatically trigger the generation of the bills. With PACS, the system is also interfaced with the various x-ray machines. So the challenge here is that the integration is so deep and extensive that it is not only between software applications but also between applications and modalities or equipment especially in the radiology, laboratory, intensive care and operating theatres where the system is interfaced directly into the equipment and what ever data or image produced by such equipment will go directly on-line into the system.
In summary, patients' medical records, guidelines and clinical protocols are instantly available and can be assessed in one integrated workstation at any place and at any time in the hospital, provided that the user has proper authority to access the information.
Being an electronic hospital that has taken the initiative to implement THIS, Selayang Hospital has become a showcase to the rest of the world.
