Department of Nephrology, Hospital Selayang is a tertiary referral centre for general nephrology, dialysis, renal transplantation and interventional nephrology. It offers a comprehensive care for a complete range of kidney diseases which include evaluation and management of acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease, pre renal transplant evaluation and post renal transplant care and management of end stage renal failure.

It also provides consultancy services and conducts outpatient nephrology and dialysis clinic in Sungai Buluh Hospital and Kuala Kubu Baru Hospital.

Inpatient Services

The Department of Nephrology has two 28 bedded nephrology wards (ward 7A and ward 7B) at level 7. Each nephrology ward is headed by a consultant nephrologist and assisted a renal registrar and 3-4 medical officers. End stage renal patients are generally managed in ward 7A while general nephrology and renal transplant patients are normally admitted to ward 7B.

Acute heamodialysis treatment is provided in the 6 stations acute haemodialysis unit. Plasma exchange, double filtration plasmapharesis and immuno-absorption services are also available.

Outpatient Services

More than 11,000 renal patients attended the nephrology outpatient clinics annually and the numbers continue to increase every year. The renal pharmacists and renal dieticians also provide dedicated counseling sessions in the nephrology clinic.

Critical Care Nephrology And Renal Consults Services

The critical care nephrology and consult unit operate 24 hours a day and received 200-300 consults a month. It provides comprehensive renal supports including intermittent acute haemodialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy and plasmapharesis.

Haemodalysis Services

The chronic haemodialysis centre is situated at level 3 and consists of two units with a total of 23 stations. It provides both chronic haemodialysis and chronic haemodialfiltration therapy to 3 shifts of patients.

Peritoneal Dialysis Services

The peritoneal dialysis (PD) unit is situated in Level 3 and provides comprehensive services inpatient and outpatient services to over 450 active PD patients. It is equipped with a treatment bay and 4 PD stations. It also provides counseling and training of new PD patients. A satellite PD unit situated inside nephrology ward 7A provides PD facilities for inpatients to perform PD exchanges.

Renal Transplant Services

Renal transplant services were started in 2000 and currently perform living related, emotionally related and cadaveric renal transplantation.

Diagnostics And Interventional Nephrology Services

The Diagnostics and Interventional Nephrology (DIN) unit is situated at level 7 and consist of an interventional nephrology suite and a procedure room. It is equipped with 2 ultrasonographic machines and a mobile C-arm and provides a wide range of diagnostics and interventional nephrology services including:-

1. Ultrasonographic examination of the native and transplanted kidneys
2. Ultrasonographic examination of vascular access and pre surgery venous mapping
3. Insertions and salvage of peritoneal dialysis catheters
4. Insertion of non cuffed haemodialysis catheters
5. Insertion of cuffed haemodialysis catheters including translumbar and transhepatic.
6. Insertion of chemoports
7. Realtime ultrasonographic guided kidney biopsy (normal and plugged kidney biopsies).

Elective procedures requiring general anaesthesia are scheduled every Monday and performed in the general operation theatre.

Training & Research


Its 3 years subspecialty nephrology training programme is designed to optimize educational experience in all field of nephrology including renal transplantation, critical care nephrology and interventional nephrology. The Department of Nephrology has been organising the Annual Diagnostics and Interventional Nephrology meeting since 2007 and received delegates from Singapore, Indonesia and Philippines.
