Klang District Hospital was built in the 1890s atop a mound near the government buildings and trade. Medical Officer (District Surgeon to the Coast District) first in charge of the hospital was attended by Dr. Dr.Watson Reid (16/01/1908 to 25/03/1908) and then Dr. Gerrard and Dr. Millard. Starting January 1, 1976, hospitals have been upgraded to the Klang General Hospital and led by a Medical Superintendent
According to statistics, in 1901, a total of 2789 outpatients and 1822 inpatients were treated in this hospital. At that time, cases of diarrhea, respiratory diseases and diseases Children are the key cases treated at this hospital.
Due to ill health the original hospital building and the need to accommodate the growing number of patients as well as to introduce new services, a new hospital has been built on an area of 25.5 hectares at a cost of RM68.5 million. Construction of the first stage began on 1 June 1979 with piling works. Work on the second stage began on 27 October 1981 and completed in February 1985. The hospital was named General Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah and opening inaugurated by His Majesty Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj Vibo son of the late Sultan Alam Shah Al-Haj on 2 September 1985. The 9-storey hospital building is located 3km from the center of Klang. The name was later changed to the Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in 1993. The Health Minister at that time was Dato 'Chin Hon Ian.
Transfer patients to hospital began in April 1985. Since May 1, 1985, all medical services are managed in this hospital services except for TB patients and psychiatry located at the site of the old hospital. At the outset it has 27 wards and 750 beds and has now increased to 29 wards and 831 beds. The hospital is now led by the Hospital Director, Deputy Director (Medical) and Deputy Director (Management).
The hospital provided service to a population of approximately 409.994 people (statistics National Statistics 1991) kepadapenduduk especially in Klang city, rural areas (estates and villages), the company, the airport and the nearby islands. These hospitals also provide specialist services to cases referred from the Hospital Banting, Malaysia Tanjung Karang and slates as well as private clinics and private medical centers.
